Park Avenue South is the portion of Park Avenue that runs from 17th street to 32nd street and has existed under this current name only since 1959. Before that, the route was called 4th Avenue for its entire length; the avenue took the name Park from East 32nd Street to the Harlem River in 1888 to calm real estate brokers. In NYC, where real estate is working very well and Park Avenue had developed into a boulevard inhabited by the movers and shakers, the city decided to extend the atmosphere south by creating Park Avenue South. On May 5, 1959, the New York City Council voted 20–1 to give the portion between 17th and 32nd Streets of fourth Avenue the name of Park Avenue South.
