One of these NYC neighborhoods is Roosevelt Island. Roosevelt Island, formally Welfare Island, is an island in the NYC borough of Manhattan. It is 147 acres large and it is a narrow island in NYC’s East River. To the east of the island is the NYC borough of Queens. The island has a population of about 10,000 inhabitants. Most of the population is white, with African Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders being the other major ethnic groups. One advantage of finding Roosevelt Island apartments is the fact that the island has several architecturally significant buildings. Unlike other parts of Manhattan that have a parking problem and congestion in the streets, residents do not drive around the island. There are several large garages where residents leave their cars. Most of the residents and visitors use public transport. Although cars are not prohibited, most of the island is still car-free because the residential community in the island was not supposed to support private vehicles. There is an on-island bus service run by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation. Another advantage of getting a rent apartment in Roosevelt Island is the fact that public transport is cheap. The tramway connects Roosevelt Island to Manhattan and Queens and it only costs $4 for a return trip and $2.25 each way. Students who have tram permits ride free of charge and those with disabilities and senior citizens only pay $1 each way. The tramway offers a great view of the city. The tram brings many tourists to the island and this drives the slowly emerging island economy. One disadvantage of living in Roosevelt Island is that there are only a few Roosevelt Island apartment rentals. This means you do not have much of a choice when selecting no fee rentals in the island and it means it is difficult to find an apartment for sale in Roosevelt Island or coop sales NYC. There are only a few apartment rentals in the island because of the island’s small size and because most of the developments, mostly apartment buildings are not yet complete.
